London Stansted Airport to introduce barrierless drop-off system in major overhaul
London Stansted Airport has unveiled plans to implement a barrier-free vehicle drop-off system at its Express Set Down (ESD) area. The move forms part of the airport’s £1.1bn transformation programme aimed at modernising operations and improving traffic flow.
Set to launch in late January 2025, the new system will rely on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, similar to the setup at the Dartford Crossing. This advancement is designed to streamline the drop-off process by eliminating the need for drivers to stop at barriers, reducing congestion and enhancing the experience for passengers and drivers alike.
Payments for using the ESD area will need to be completed by midnight the following day, either online or via phone. On-site payment at the point of exit will no longer be an option. Regular users, including taxi drivers, will have the opportunity to register for an auto-pay account. Full details on this system will be made available in the new year. Discounts for local residents who qualify under the current scheme will remain unchanged.
Clear signage will be installed throughout the ESD area to inform drivers of the changes once the new system is operational. The airport has expressed confidence that this modernised approach will provide a more efficient and seamless experience for its users.
Anita Harrison, London Stansted’s Customer Operations Director, said: “We recently announced our five-year £1.1bn investment programme that will deliver wide-ranging benefits at every touch point of a passenger’s journey while at the airport, and this initiative is an example of our commitment to enhance the travel experience at London Stansted.
“The new barrierless system we will introduce in the new year will make dropping-off passengers quicker and more convenient, reducing driver waiting times and helping improve passenger flows.
“We have seen these systems work effectively at other airports and in other settings, such as bridges, toll roads and tunnels and that is why we are confident it will improve the overall experience for users.
“Full details of the new system will be available on our website early in 2025, with new signage also displayed in the ESD area advising users of the pending changes, but it’s important to raise awareness now so drivers have advanced notice of the improvements we are bringing in.”
