LONDON NOVEMBER TUBE STRIKES: RMT suspends Tube strikes, but Aslef yet to follow

Updated: Nov 3

A planned series of strikes by the RMT union has been suspended after intense negotiations with London Underground. The breakthrough comes after management made a ‘significantly improved’ offer to the union.

RMT officials confirmed that London Underground has withdrawn proposed changes to pay structures. This guarantees equal pay value in any award for all members. Talks between both sides will resume next week to finalise details of the pay offer, but union leaders credit progress to the strength of their 10,000 members who had been prepared to take industrial action.

Despite this progress, disruption still threatens. Aslef, the union representing tube drivers, has not cancelled strikes set to take place next Thursday and the following Tuesday. These planned stoppages are expected to cause considerable disruption across the Underground network if a deal cannot be reached.

Further discussions are anticipated as unions and management continue negotiations in an effort to avoid more disruption.

An RMT spokesperson said: "Following intense negotiations with London Underground management and a significantly improved offer, we have suspended the strikes scheduled to start this evening.

"London Underground have sensibly abandoned their proposed changes to pay structures which now means all our members will receive the same value in any pay award.

"Further discussions will take place next week regarding the pay offer but progress has been made which would not have been possible without the fortitude and industrial strength of our 10,000 members on London Underground."
