London Heathrow private hire drivers raise concerns over WKL work conditions

Updated: Jul 17

Private hire drivers operating from London Heathrow Airport under We Know London (WKL) are voicing concerns about their working conditions. These drivers, represented by the GMB union, have highlighted several issues.

The GMB has been alerted to a shift towards three-month contracts, sparking fears about job security among the WKL workforce. This temporary arrangement is seen as creating a precarious work environment, which deters drivers from reporting unfair treatment or safety concerns.

According to the union, WKL also mandates that drivers who rent vehicles from the company must accept all assigned journeys, as dictated by their contracts.

Steve Garelick, a GMB representative, explained: "Our members feel they are living on a knife’s edge with these short-term contracts and unable to raise genuine concerns. Afraid that if your face doesn’t fit you are gone, regardless of your driving and customer service record."

According to the union, drivers report being pressured to drive vehicles. Additionally, there are complaints about communication difficulties with an offshore control room based in Serbia, which hinders the exchange of crucial information.

The call for WKL to address the issues is growing, with the GMB union standing firm in support of the drivers seeking a safer and more secure working environment.

Garelick added via the GMB website: “Drivers have said they are pressured to operate vehicles with damaged tyres and other potential safety hazards.

“Another claim is that the offshore control room staffed by personnel in Serbia, utilised by WKL creates communication barriers, hindering clear and necessary information.

“These issues amount to anti-union, bullying tactics. We Know London drivers deserve a fair and safe working environment. We urge the company to address these concerns and prioritise the well-being of its employees and passengers.”
