Labour minister confirms they will be ‘considering what actions can be taken’ to improve taxi and private hire licensing
The new Labour Government confirms they will be ‘considering what actions can be taken’ to improve the licensing systems within the taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) industry.
A minister from the Department for Transport (DfT) has revealed intentions to explore potential improvements to the licensing systems within the taxi industry. This move comes in response to a query from Rachael Maskell, the Labour MP for York Central.
As part of a parliamentary written question, Maskell sought clarification from the Secretary of State for Transport on whether a review of taxi licensing is on the cards.
Simon Lightwood MP, Transport Minister, responded, stating that the Government continuously reviews policies. He confirmed that they are currently considering actions to enhance the taxi and PHV licensing framework.
There are currently several areas of hot debate in the taxi industry ranging from cross border concerns to the introduction of national standards. The early signs suggest this government may be more committed to addressing issues within the sector than its predecessors.
Lightwood MP said: “The Government keeps all policies under review. We will be considering what actions can be taken to improve the existing taxi and private hire vehicle licensing system.”
