KEEP YOUR KEYS CLOSE: Essential advice for taxi drivers helping customers

Perry Richardson

Taxi drivers, take note: where you store your keys while driving is more important than you might think.

Leaving key fobs in trays or compartments within your vehicle might seem convenient. However, this habit could expose you to unnecessary risks, particularly when assisting passengers outside the cab.

If a thief were to target a taxi while the driver is temporarily out of the vehicle, the cab is left vulnerable.

Modern vehicles are designed with safety features that disable the engine when the key fob is out of range. This makes it crucial for drivers to keep their keys on their person at all times.

For those driving older models with traditional ignition keys, the advice is simple: switch off the engine and remove the keys whenever you step out.

Ultimately, the safest approach is to keep your keys with you at all times. It’s a straightforward practice that could prevent potential carjackings and keep your cab secure.
