INSURANCE HEROS: Melvyn and Norma top UK list for longest no claims bonus streaks

New research by MoneySuperMarket has identified the first names most often linked to long stretches without car insurance claims.
The study found that men named Melvyn have, on average, the longest no claims bonus (NCB) history, with 14 years and 2 months. For women, the top name is Norma, also with an average NCB of 14 years and 2 months.
Insurance providers use no claims data to assess risk when calculating premium costs. The longer a driver has gone without claiming, the more likely they are to be offered reduced prices.
The male names following Melvyn include Norman with 14 years and 1 month, and Geoff with just under 14 years. Other names featuring high on the list include Neville, Leslie and Malcolm, each associated with more than 13 years of average NCB.
Among women, Pat and Pam rank just behind Norma, with average no claims periods of 13 years and 11 months, and 13 years and 10 months respectively. Beryl, Jean and Valerie also feature in the top ten.
The list suggests a trend towards older names, with many of the top-ranked names most popular between the 1930s and 1960s, pointing to a link between driving experience and fewer claims.
According to Alicia Hempsted, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, anyone can benefit from a no claims bonus after just one year. Once someone is the main driver on a policy, they begin building their NCB, regardless of their name.
Hempsted said: “Insurers look at the length of time since you last made a claim on your insurance when they calculate the cost of your premium. The longer your No Claims Bonus, the less risky you are to insure, and that means a lower price for your premium. Whilst our research shows that Melvyns and Normas tend to have the longest no claims records, anyone can start seeing cost-saving benefits after just one year of no claims, and any driver can start building up their no claims bonus as soon as they’re the main driver on a policy.”
