The evolution of bi-fuel technology for the LEVC TX taxis and VN5 is gaining momentum following successful demonstrations of LPG, biopropane, CNG, and biomethane adaptations.

Developed in collaboration with Prins Alternative Fuel Systems, SBL-Automotive is now exploring new alternative fuel concepts aimed at reducing carbon emissions and achieving net zero goals.

Three additional fuel pathways have been introduced for the spark-ignition range extender engines of these vehicles. These include hydrogen, hythane, and ammonia as alternatives to traditional petrol. Each offers a unique approach to low-carbon and renewable energy use, while maintaining the bi-fuel design that allows for petrol utilisation when needed.

Hydrogen, a fuel with net zero carbon emissions, can be stored onboard in high-pressure tanks at 350 or 700 bar. Another innovation under development is the use of replaceable fuel cartridges, eliminating the need for high-pressure tanks and specialised refuelling infrastructure.

Hythane, a blend of hydrogen and methane, offers another step towards hydrogen adoption. Typically composed of 20% hydrogen and 80% methane or biomethane, hythane uses lower-pressure tanks, similar to those already deployed for CNG and biomethane.

Ammonia, meanwhile, provides a storage advantage as it can be kept in moderate-pressure liquid form, much like LPG. This fuel can operate independently or in combination with others such as LPG, CNG, or hydrogen, enhancing combustion efficiency through a dual-fuel spark-ignition process.

These new bi-fuel concepts highlight the potential for expanded adoption of renewable and low-carbon fuels in commercial vehicles. While the supply of these fuels is still developing, these innovations mark significant progress in offering practical alternatives for cleaner transport solutions.
