The HMRC app has reached new heights in 2024, with two million additional users now accessing tax information and making secure payments through the platform. This surge brings the total number of app downloads to over seven million since its launch in late 2017.

The app has become a vital tool for millions, allowing users to check tax codes, view annual summaries, and handle payments with ease. Most users favour early mornings, with logins between 9am and 10am proving the most popular.

In the past year alone, the app recorded over 100 million sessions and received £652 million in Self Assessment payments. Particularly notable is a 77% rise in downloads among 16 to 25-year-olds, solidifying the app’s position as a leader in the finance app charts.

November saw HMRC ramp up efforts to attract younger users, launching a promotional campaign targeting 18 to 34-year-olds. A promotional video titled “You’re on it” is now available on YouTube to encourage downloads.

HMRC continues to highlight the app’s convenience and security, urging those not yet on board to download it via the App Store or Google Play. With features like the ability to save your National Insurance number to a digital wallet, the app offers users instant access to personal tax information, anytime and anywhere.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said: “The HMRC app is a great tool to access your National Insurance number, claim Child Benefit or pay your Self Assessment tax bill on the go. There are lots of services available through the app which can save you a phone call and get you an answer quickly and easily. So why not join the 2 million new users who have downloaded the app this year?”
