Guildford taxi rank changes approved for North Street redevelopment
Guildford Borough Council has approved a series of temporary changes to taxi ranks as part of the North Street Redevelopment Project. The adjustments, set to come into effect in early summer 2025, will align with the construction schedule.
Cllr Merel Rehorst-Smith, Lead Councillor for Licensing, highlighted the importance of taxi ranks in maintaining transport efficiency and public safety. She confirmed that once the redevelopment is complete, a further review will be conducted with Surrey County Council to ensure adequate, well-placed taxi facilities.
During the works, several taxi ranks will be relocated or temporarily suspended. Parking bays on the lower High Street will be converted into a temporary taxi rank, while a section of double yellow lines on Bedford Road outside St James House will be designated for nighttime taxi use. The existing ranks outside the Friary Centre and Marks & Spencer on North Street will close, with the latter being removed to facilitate pedestrianisation.
Despite these changes, alternative taxi ranks remain in operation across the town, including locations on Bedford Road, Upper High Street, Millbrook, and at both Guildford railway stations.
The council maintains that the adjustments will balance the demands of the redevelopment with public convenience, ensuring taxis remain accessible throughout the project.
Cllr Merel Rehorst-Smith, Lead Councillor for Licensing, said: "Taxi ranks are an integral part of the nation's transport infrastructure. They provide designated locations where licensed taxis can wait for customers. This reduces the need for taxis to search for fares.
"Well-defined and well-managed taxi rank locations also enhance public safety making it easier for customers to use licensed taxis. These adjustments will help maintain efficient services and prioritise public convenience as Guildford undergoes this exciting redevelopment. Once North Street is complete, the number and locations of taxi ranks will be reviewed with Surrey County Council to ensure we are providing a good amount of well-located licensed spaces accessible to all."
