GMB raises concerns over Uber multi-stop fare pricing policies

Concerns about how multi-stop journeys are priced have come to the forefront in recent discussions between the GMB Uber National Committee and Uber management.

At a meeting held on 10 December 2024, GMB representatives highlighted how drivers are negatively impacted when riders make changes mid-journey, such as adding multiple stops. The driver representatives say current pricing structures are often ‘undervalued’, even though these trips take more time and cover greater distances.

GMB argues that undervaluing multi-stop trips not only reduces drivers’ earnings but also raises questions about the contractual agreement between drivers and Uber. Accepting a trip sets terms between both parties, and any post-acceptance alterations risk undermining this arrangement.

Late-night multi-drop journeys are an integral part of taxi and private hire vehicle work, especially in ensuring passengers get home safely after social events or work shifts. For drivers, such trips require additional time, effort, and navigation skills, particularly when collecting and dropping off passengers at multiple locations.

The GMB’s intervention seeks to address these imbalances, advocating for fairer treatment of drivers who carry out these types of journeys.

The GMB Union update report states: “Fares often decrease when riders add stops mid-journey, despite increased time and distance.

“Multi-stop trips are undervalued, and changes made to trips after acceptance breach the terms agreed between drivers and Uber.”
