Uber drivers in Glasgow gathered outside the company’s Washington Street offices today, demanding improved pay and clearer protections.

The demonstration, organised by GMB Scotland, saw drivers calling for action to stop declining earnings and push for safer working conditions.

According to the union, drivers have grown frustrated by the lack of transparency in how their fares and wages are determined. GMB Scotland recently surveyed its members, with results showing that only 20% of drivers are earning more now than they were a year ago. Paul McLaughlin, GMB Scotland’s organiser, stressed that Uber’s use of surge pricing must be clarified to ensure that additional revenue benefits drivers fairly.

A national pay and conditions claim is currently under negotiation, with GMB Scotland urging Uber to address it through collective bargaining.

Another key issue raised by drivers is the introduction of Uber’s new “Trip Radar” system. The feature, which sends fare offers to multiple drivers simultaneously, has sparked concerns about road safety. Drivers fear that the system’s demands for their attention could lead to distractions, increasing the risk of accidents for both drivers and passengers.

McLaughlin said: “Our members are committed and skilled drivers working to ensure a first-class service for Uber users.

“The very least they deserve is to be given full and clear information about how fares and earnings are calculated.

“The company must understand the need for that clarity and urgently deliver it.”

McLaughlin added: “The rollout of this [Trip Radar] system should be paused until the drivers’ concerns are properly addressed.

“The company’s absolute priority must be the safety of our members and every other road user.”
