From TX to Tourneo: What are the most popular vehicles chosen by UK taxi drivers

The LEVC TX has emerged as the most popular vehicle currently used by UK drivers licensed solely as taxis, according to the 2024/25 National Taxi Driver Survey.

Among taxi licence holders, the TX and older TX4 models dominate in London, where their zero-emission capability and accessibility features meet strict local licensing requirements. The TX remains the preferred model for many urban drivers looking for compliance, space, and electric capability.

Outside of the capital, the Ford Tourneo tops the list. Its combination of space, comfort and affordability has made it a leading choice in regional areas. It is joined by other Ford models such as the Galaxy and Mondeo, which are widely used in both city and rural settings due to their practicality and lower running costs.

Volkswagen’s Passat and Skoda’s Superb and Octavia models also feature prominently in the list of most used vehicles among taxi drivers. These models are popular with drivers favouring traditional saloon or estate formats, offering boot capacity and comfortable seating for longer shifts.

The Citroën Berlingo stands out as a regular choice in the East of England and parts of the South West. Its upright design and flexible interior space are well suited for rural and semi-urban taxi operations.

Toyota’s Prius and Corolla models also maintain a strong presence. Despite being more commonly associated with private hire, they are still selected by taxi drivers in regions such as the North East and West Midlands, where fuel efficiency and hybrid technology are key factors.

Survey data revealed strong regional variation in the vehicles used. London remains the stronghold of the LEVC TX, while areas such as Yorkshire and the South West favour more conventional saloons and estates. Accessibility remains a major driver in vehicle choice, with 73% of taxi-only vehicles reported as wheelchair accessible.

While electric models are growing in popularity, most taxi-only drivers are still operating diesel or hybrid vehicles. Infrastructure concerns and high vehicle costs are barriers to wider EV adoption, but the LEVC TX’s strong showing suggests change is already under way in the sector.

The survey reflects a taxi industry that continues to balance local licensing conditions, passenger needs and operational efficiency when choosing vehicles.
