The newly opened Silvertown Tunnel has been welcomed by FREENOW as a key addition to London’s road network, with the ride-hailing platform highlighting benefits for taxi drivers and passengers.
Danny O’Gorman, FREENOW’s new UK General Manager, said the new Thames crossing marks an important moment for the capital’s transport infrastructure. He pointed to reduced congestion and faster journeys as expected outcomes from the tunnel’s introduction.
Taxis will be exempt from the daily user charge on the Silvertown Tunnel, which O’Gorman described as a cost-saving measure for drivers. This, he said, supports the ability of drivers to provide efficient and timely transport services to passengers across the city.
The Silvertown Tunnel is designed to relieve pressure on the Blackwall Tunnel, one of the most heavily used river crossings in East London. It forms part of TfL’s wider aim to reduce journey delays and improve connections between the north and south of the Thames.
O’Gorman reaffirmed FREENOW’s commitment to assisting its drivers in adapting to changes across the network. He said upgrades like the Silvertown Tunnel were vital in improving reliability and traffic flow throughout London.
Danny O’Gorman said: “The opening of Silvertown Tunnel marks a new milestone for London’s transport infrastructure, and we remain optimistic about the positive impact it will have on reducing congestion and improving journey times for our taxi drivers and passengers.
“With taxis exempt from the daily user charge - this is a real win for our drivers, helping them keep costs down while providing a faster and more efficient service for Londoners. At FREENOW, we’re committed to supporting our drivers as they navigate the city, and infrastructure upgrades like this are crucial for improving reliability, congestion and connectivity across the capital.”
