FREENOW throws its support towards new campaign to help taxi drivers go electric

Updated: Oct 20

FREENOW UK has voiced its strong support for the recently launched Cabbies for the Climate campaign, an initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) within London’s black cab fleet. The campaign, launched yesterday, aims to help drivers overcome financial barriers and push the city closer to its sustainability goals.

The Cabbies for the Climate campaign advocates for increased financial backing for black cab drivers, many of whom face prohibitive costs when switching to electric taxis. This includes calls to reinstate and expand government grants and other forms of financial aid to make the transition more accessible. With the average cost of an electric taxi remaining significantly higher than a traditional diesel cab, many drivers are struggling to make the switch, despite recognising the environmental benefits.

Sam Pooke, Senior Policy Manager at FREENOW UK, highlighted this issue, citing a recent survey where 90% of black cab drivers stressed the importance of affordability in supporting their transition to EVs. The survey also revealed that 72% of drivers have felt a financial strain from the costs of electric vehicles.

The campaign is a direct call for more government intervention to ensure London’s cab drivers are equipped to contribute to the city’s decarbonisation and reduce urban emissions.

Pooke said: “FREENOW welcomes the Cabbies for the Climate campaign to accelerate the transition of London’s iconic taxi fleet to electric vehicles, including reinstating and expanding financial support for taxi drivers. We know the limited EV taxi offer and the cost of buying and running an EV vehicle is prohibitive for many drivers. A recent survey revealed that nine in 10 black cab drivers said that making EV taxis more affordable is important in supporting them in making the transition, with 72% stating that the cost of vehicles impacted them financially.

“At FREENOW, over 70% of trips are done with EV black cabs, and we continue to support drivers with the costs of running their EVs through our partnerships with OVO and bp Pulse where they can access unique discounts. However, if the government is serious about its sustainability targets, it needs to do more to support taxi drivers and ensure they are at the forefront and can contribute to the decarbonisation of our cities.”
