Nottingham City Council has taken legal action against four private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers for illegally plying for hire and driving without insurance.
Plying for hire refers to picking up passengers without a pre-booking through a licensed operator. Unlike hackney carriages, which can be hailed on the street or wait at taxi ranks, private hire vehicles must be booked in advance. When a PHV driver picks up passengers without a booking, their insurance is invalid, putting both passengers and other road users at risk.
Two of the prosecuted drivers were fined £2,337.97 each and given eight penalty points on their licences. Another driver received a £1,057.79 fine with the same penalty points, while the fourth was fined £1,721.97, also with eight points.
The council continues to monitor and take action against unauthorised activity to ensure passenger safety and uphold licensing laws.
A Nottingham City Council Licensing spokesperson said: "Nottingham City Council Licensing has prosecuted 4 x PHV drivers for illegally plying for hire and no insurance. 2 x drivers fined £2,337.97 and 8 penalty points, 1 x driver fined £1,057.79 and 8 penalty points, and 1 x driver fined £1,721.97 and 8 penalty points.”
