Police in Northamptonshire were assisted in an unusual way during a recent car theft investigation, as farmers used tractors to block in a Toyota Prius taxi to stop a suspect from fleeing.

A vehicle reported stolen the previous night had failed to stop for officers before crashing. The driver fled the scene, only to be discovered asleep in a nearby barn by a farmer, who promptly alerted authorities.

In an unexpected turn, as officers arrived at the location, the farmer and colleagues effectively “stopped” the getaway by using two tractors to box a Prius taxi.

The suspect was swiftly arrested. Images shared on social media by Northants Roads Policing showed the immobilised Prius trapped between the agricultural vehicles.

The incident highlights the unique ways communities can assist law enforcement in tackling crime.

A Northants Roads Policing officer said on social media: “Vehicle stolen the previous night, failed to stop, crashed and driver decamped.

“Farmer calls 999, unknown male asleep in his barn

“Just as police arrive the farmers compete their stop on a taxi. Male arrested.”
