A FAIR-WAY PRICE? Rare Fairway black taxi with only 13 miles on the clock heads to auction
Iconic Auctioneers have listed a unique piece of London’s motoring history: a 1997 Fairway black taxi with a mere 13 miles on the clock.
The Fairway, also known as the FX4, is a symbol of London, much like the red Routemaster buses and red telephone boxes. Produced by Carbodies Ltd, now the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC), from 1958 to 1997, the Fairway's distinctive design and spacious interior made it a fixture on the city's streets.
Phased out in favour of the TX1, the Fairway remained beloved by Londoners. Many stayed in service for decades, but this particular model, R80 CAB, has led a unique life.
Registered on 23 September 1997, R80 CAB was among the last Fairway taxis produced. It has been owned by a single keeper and kept as part of a private collection. With just 12 miles on the odometer, it is in pristine condition, fitted with the Nissan TD27 2.7-litre diesel engine and a 3-speed automatic transmission. The taxi includes full wheelchair accessibility, adhering to the regulations introduced in January 1989.
Upon delivery, R80 CAB was mothballed alongside an early TX1 model. Both vehicles were stored in temperature-controlled conditions and maintained meticulously, run up to temperature annually and kept in factory-original condition, including the intact LTI protective wrappings.
