End of an Era: Crawley taxi drivers celebrate retiring local icon

Crawley’s Hackney carriage community has said goodbye to one of its most respected and longest-serving members, Ummat Rasool, who has retired after decades of service to the trade.


According to a spokesperson from the Crawley Hackney Carriage Association (CHCA), Ummat’s career has been defined by professionalism, dedication, and a deep sense of integrity, making him a widely admired figure among passengers and colleagues. His unwavering commitment to the job has left a lasting impression on Crawley’s taxi industry, where he has become a benchmark for excellence.

Known for his approachable demeanour and reliability, Ummat built strong connections with passengers, offering more than just a ride. To many, he was a familiar and dependable presence, turning routine journeys into positive experiences.


For his fellow drivers, Ummat was a mentor and a steady influence, always ready with guidance and support. His ability to handle challenges calmly and fairly has helped shape the culture of Crawley’s Hackney carriage trade, leaving an enduring legacy.

An CHCA spokesperson said: “In his honor, the Crawley Hackney drivers arranged a heartfelt farewell party, expressing their gratitude and bidding him a fond farewell. On behalf of the entire Crawley Hackney team, we extend our deepest thanks to Ummat Rasool for his exceptional service, unwavering friendship, and the high standard he set for everyone in the trade.


“We wish him a retirement filled with joy, relaxation, and new adventures.
