Edinburgh taxis set for 9.5% fare increase and airport drop off fee rise
The City of Edinburgh Council has confirmed changes to the city’s taxi fare structure, set to come into effect on 9 December 2024, following a review and consultation.
Key adjustments include a 9.5% increase across all tariffs and a revision of the airport pick-up and drop-off charges, now allowing a charge up to £6, aligning with actual fees incurred.
The fare review was conducted by consultancy firm Jacobs, whose recommendations were initially endorsed by the Council’s Regulatory Committee in September. After a mandatory public consultation period, 52 responses were received. While approximately a quarter supported the fare increase, the majority opposed it, with many calling for a more moderate rise or none at all.
The fare adjustments aim to reflect rising operational costs in the taxi industry, including vehicle maintenance, fuel prices, and licensing expenses.
If implemented as planned, these changes would see Edinburgh’s taxi fares rise from 34th to 12th place in a UK-wide ranking of local authorities, making the city one of the more expensive areas for taxi services.
Councillors have acknowledged public concerns over affordability, particularly among Edinburgh’s residents. However, officials noted that the fare tariff sets the maximum rate drivers may charge, allowing flexibility for operators to adjust fares at their discretion. Additionally, drivers retain the option to appeal the new rates within a statutory 14-day period.
