East Dunbartonshire Council proposes 3% increase in taxi fares

East Dunbartonshire Council is consulting on proposed changes to taxi fares and charges, including a 3% rise in maximum fares and adjustments to additional charges.
The Council is legally required to review taxi fare structures regularly. An initial consultation with taxi operators, booking offices, and trade associations took place in August and September 2024.
A trade association responding to the consultation recognised the financial pressures on communities but suggested revised charges to reflect increasing costs in vehicle maintenance, licensing, insurance, and inspections.
The proposal includes a 3% rise in maximum fares, rounded to the nearest five pence. However, the extra charge for journeys to and from the drop-off and pick-up zone at Glasgow Airport is set to rise to £5.50.
Representations on the proposed changes will be considered until 4 April 2025, before the Council reaches a final decision. The current fare structure has been in place since December 2022 and is reviewed under section 17 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982.
Further discussions with the taxi trade are planned, with a broader review of fare structures, distances, and additional charges to follow. A report on this wider review will be published at a later date.
Councillor Gordan Low, Leader of the Council and Convener of the Policy and Resources Committee, said: “Following consultation with the taxi trade, a new framework of fares and charges has been proposed. Please find out more by visiting the Taxi Fares Review consultation webpage – by 4 April 2025.”
