E-scooter rider arrested for drink driving and no insurance after breaking dog’s leg in park fall
A rider of an e-scooter has been arrested for drink driving and having no insurance after breaking the leg of a dog they were carrying.
The rider of the uninsured two wheeled vehicle was riding through London’s Hyde Park on Boxing Day. Whilst travelling through the capital’s biggest park the drunk rider came off the vehicle whilst holding their pet dog.
Unfortunately the dog sustained a broken leg in the incident. The dog was taken to the vets and is said to be ‘recovering’ according to police sources.
The user of the e-scooter was charged with drink driving and no insurance.
Royal Parks Metropolitan Police posted on social media: “Rider of e scooter came off in Hyde Park last night. Had been drinking and was carrying his dog. The dog suffered a broken leg. Rider arrested drink driving and the dog was taken to the vet. Rider charged drink driving and no insurance. The dog is recovering.”
Last month Transport for London (TfL) and London Councils launched a competition to select up to three operators for a twelve-month trial of rental e-scooters in the capital.
Based on guidance issued by the Department for Transport (DfT) in summer, local authorities in the UK are now allowed to trial e-scooters as part of a rental scheme.
The use of privately owned e-scooters on public roads is not covered by these changes and remains illegal in the UK.
Mohamed Shardi, 22, appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court on 21 December where he pleaded guilty to the multiple offences including:
Drink driving
Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence
Driving with no insurance
Criminal damage to a police cell.
At court, Shardi was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 20 months and handed fines totalling nearly £410. Part of the fine includes payment for the damage to the police cell which he defaced with excrement.
