Durham taxi and private hire vehicle safety checks uncover multiple issues

Perry Richardson

Durham County Council and local police have carried out a joint operation to ensure taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) safety, revealing mechanical faults in several vehicles.

Licensing officers, supported by Durham Constabulary and the Police and Crime Commissioner, targeted a small number of drivers failing to meet legal standards. With thousands of taxis operating in the county, the majority comply with regulations, but enforcement focused on those putting passengers at risk.

Officers stopped licensed vehicles in Durham to assess roadworthiness and compliance. Of the 28 vehicles inspected, four failed due to mechanical issues, including tyre defects, a split CV boot, and an engine management warning. Two of the vehicles were licensed in County Durham, while the others were registered elsewhere in the region.

One driver received a £100 fine and three penalty points after being found with tyre treads below the legal limit. The vehicles were examined by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency at a specialist garage.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety standards across the county’s taxi services.
