Dundee councillor urges taxi safety over festive season

A senior Dundee councillor is calling on the city’s taxi operators to prioritise passenger safety by ensuring all drivers are clearly identifiable over the Christmas and New Year period.

Councillor Stewart Hunter, convener of the licensing committee, has emphasised the importance of visible identification, such as driver badges, vehicle plates, and signage, to provide reassurance to passengers, particularly those who may not regularly use taxis.

Talks between Dundee City Council and the taxi industry have been ongoing to ensure these measures are adhered to throughout the festive period. The initiative aims to boost public confidence and ensure a safe experience for passengers during one of the busiest times of the year.

The council has maintained regular dialogue with the trade to address emerging issues, with passenger safety remaining a key focus.

Cllr Hunter said: “We are working together with the taxi trade to make sure that people know exactly who their driver is when they get into a taxi.

“The display of the appropriate signage and badge is a simple way of ensuring this.

“The council works on an ongoing basis with the taxi trade to discuss issues that emerge.”
