Drunk passenger handed suspended sentence for ‘awful’ attack on taxi driver in Peterborough
A man who punched a taxi driver in an ‘awful’ unprovoked attack has been sentenced at Huntingdon Magistrates’ Court.
Mathew Warner, 27, assaulted the driver after being dropped off outside his home in Sprignall, Bretton, Peterborough, in the early hours of Sunday 26 January.
The driver had picked up Warner from Bourne, Lincolnshire, after police ordered him to leave the area due to intoxication. After reaching his destination, Warner attacked the driver without warning before the victim called police.
Warner was arrested and later admitted assault by beating. He was sentenced to six weeks in prison, suspended for a year, and ordered to pay £200 in compensation.
PC Harvey, who investigated, said: “The unprovoked assault the victim endured was awful.
“No one should be subjected to violence while trying to do their job, and I would like to thank the victim for contacting us as soon as he could.”
