DRIVING IN THE SNOW: Winter driving pitfalls that could leave you out of pocket

Winter weather brings more than icy roads and foggy mornings; it also carries a range of risks that could leave motorists with hefty fines, invalid insurance claims, or even the loss of their no-claims bonuses.

Insurance comparison firm Quotezone.co.uk has revealed common winter mistakes drivers make, along with the financial penalties and legal issues they could face. Simple changes to behaviour, they argue, could save drivers significant sums.

Defrosting Dangers

Leaving your car running unattended to defrost the windscreen may seem harmless, but it can void your insurance if a thief makes off with the vehicle. It’s also a breach of the Road Traffic Act 1988, commonly referred to as ‘idling’, and contributes to air pollution.

Avoid Boiling Water

Pouring boiling water on your frozen windscreen might seem like a quick fix, but the sudden temperature change can cause the glass to crack. Repairing windscreen damage is not always covered by standard insurance policies. Instead, consider using a frost guard, defogger, or homemade de-icer, such as lukewarm water mixed with rubbing alcohol.

Clear All Obstructions

Failing to clear your windscreen of ice, snow, or debris before driving could land you with a £1,000 fine and three penalty points. All windows, mirrors, and even lights must be clear to avoid reduced visibility on the road.

Tyre Checks Are Vital

Driving with faulty tyres can cost up to £2,500 per tyre and three points on your licence. Multiple defective tyres could result in a driving ban. For commercial drivers, employers could face penalties of up to £20,000.

Keep Plates Clean

Mud and grit from winter roads can obscure your numberplate. If it becomes unreadable, you risk a £1,000 fine.

Avoid Floodwater

Driving through floods isn’t just a gamble with your safety. Some insurance policies explicitly exclude cover for water damage if you ignore advice to avoid flooded roads.

Watch Those Puddles

Deliberately splashing pedestrians by driving through large puddles is not only inconsiderate but also illegal, carrying a £100 fine and three points.

Greg Wilson, Founder of car insurance comparison site Quotezone.co.uk, said: “As winter approaches, it’s not just the fines that motorists should worry about, points on a driving licence are noted by insurers as a sign of how safe a driver is and what the risk of a claim might be when calculating premiums.

“Three points on a licence can add 5% to premiums every year until the points are spent after four years. Six points pushes premiums up by as much as 25%, and let’s not forget No Claims Bonuses and what they might be worth if they’ve been built up over time and now have to be accrued again from scratch.

“Careful, considerate and patient drivers who plan for the winter weather and adjust their behaviour to meet the conditions give themselves the best chance of avoiding points and keeping their premiums low.”
