CROSS BORDER CHECKS: Wolverhampton, Stratford and Warwick Councils meet to conduct taxi and private hire checks
Updated: Jul 30
A recent operation conducted by Wolverhampton Council’s taxi licensing team in Stratford-upon-Avon highlights the need for robust cross-border enforcement in the taxi and private hire vehicle (PHV) industry.
A collaboration with Warwickshire Police, Stratford Council, and Warwick Council, the team focused on maintaining public safety and ensuring compliance with regulations.
The operation's results remain undisclosed, but the initiative draws attention to the importance of cross-border checks. These inspections are essential due to the increasing practice of drivers working outside the areas where they are licensed.
UK regulations allow licensed drivers to operate beyond the boundaries of the issuing authority, which can complicate oversight. Local licensing authorities must travel outside their jurisdictions to monitor and enforce standards. This ensures that all drivers, regardless of where they are currently working, adhere to the safety and professional standards set by their original licensing body.
Regular operations across England and Wales are crucial for protecting public safety and maintaining the integrity of the taxi and PHV industry. They help to ensure that drivers comply with vehicle standards, insurance requirements, and driver regulations, regardless of where they are operating. Daily cross-border enforcement is a key aspect of keeping the public safe and maintaining confidence in taxi and PHV services across the UK.
A WV Public Protection spokesperson said: “Wolverhampton Council taxi licensing working tonight in Stratford Upon Avon jointly with Warwickshire Police, Stratford Council and Warwick Council. Excellent team work in operation keeping public safe.”
