Coventry taxi driver jailed for sexual assault on passenger in back of cab
A Coventry taxi driver has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a passenger in the back of his vehicle.
Abdul Wahab, 47, was convicted of the offence, which occurred in December 2022. The victim, a woman who had hired Wahab to take her home after a night out in Coventry city centre, was assaulted during the journey when Wahab stopped the vehicle, entered the back, and attacked her.
During police interviews, Wahab’s account repeatedly shifted. He initially denied the incident before claiming memory loss. He further suggested that someone else with access to his taxi could have been responsible. However, mobile phone data placed him at the scene of the offence, and investigators built a robust case disproving his claims.
Wahab was convicted in July 2023 and held in custody until sentencing. On Monday, 20 January, he was jailed for three years and placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We take sexual offences extremely seriously and will always investigate fully any reports we receive.
“We always encourage survivors of sex offences to come forward and tell us your story.
“Our officers investigate all reports, however long ago they were.”
