South Ribble Borough Council is set to launch a public consultation over plans to standardise the type and positioning of signage which should be carried by private hire cars.
Concerns have been raised by taxi and private hire users over the current system, which they say can be confusing.
The new signage, if approved, will carry a warning educating passengers that if the vehicle wasn't pre-booked, then it is not insured for that journey.
Only licensed Hackney carriage taxis are allowed to pick up a street-hail which hasn't been booked in advance.
Private hire drivers caught illegally plying for hire or accepting a job which has not been pre-booked could face a heavy fine and run the risk of having their licence revoked by their licensing authority.
