CODE RED: A taxi driver’s top tips for passengers looking to maximise their chances of finding a taxi at ultra peak times

Perry Richardson

Hailing a black cab during peak times can feel like a challenge. Whether it’s rush hour, a busy evening, or Christmas chaos, a bit of strategy can save you both time and frustration. Strategically understanding where cabs are most likely to become available and knowing alternative options will greatly improve your chances of getting a ride.

Taxi ranks are sometimes the most dependable option, but not always. Found near transport hubs like train stations, large hotels, and major landmarks, these dedicated waiting areas usually provide a steady stream of black cabs. Drivers usually head to these ranks when seeking passengers, especially after drop-offs, but the access of the rank plays a big part in the number of cabs that actually make it to the rank available to those waiting.

If heading to a rank isn’t practical, look for areas where cabs are likely to have just dropped off passengers. Popular spots such as theatres, restaurants, or shopping areas often see a consistent flow of departing passengers. Cabs that drop off at these locations are typically looking for their next fare straight away and don’t get as far as a taxi rank at ultra busy times. Positioning yourself near these drop-off points can put you in a prime spot to hail an available driver as passengers disembark the cab.

High footfall areas can be tricky when it comes to hailing a cab. In crowded locations, competition for taxis is high, and drivers often avoid stopping due to the difficulty of pulling over. Moving away from these zones and finding less congested streets can work to your advantage. Drivers often use quieter routes or cut-throughs to navigate busy traffic, so positioning yourself in these areas can sometimes make you more visible to passing cabs heading towards the areas of high demand.

One-way systems also offer an opportunity. By moving to the start of a one-way street, you increase your chances of spotting an empty cab before it picks up another fare.

If you’re struggling to hail a cab in person, turning to technology provides an alternative. Taxi apps, such as those provided by black cab services, offer a convenient way to book a ride. These apps allow passengers to connect directly with available drivers, often showing real-time updates and estimated arrival times. Booking through an app can be particularly useful in areas where cabs are less likely to circulate.

While the tips above will help in most scenarios, patience is often key during peak times. Large events or heavy traffic can mean longer waits, but a little planning and positioning can make the process far smoother.
