City of London Police have taken action against an illegally modified e-bike pedicab found travelling at high speed along the Embankment cycle lane.

Officers from the cycle team intercepted the vehicle, citing safety concerns for other road users and potential mechanical hazards.

According to the police spokesperson, the vehicle had been altered to effectively transform it into a motor-tricycle. The modifications raised concerns not only about the vehicle’s compliance with road regulations but also the increased fire risk posed by the unauthorised changes.

Images shared by the police show a bright red pedicab, the kind typically seen ferrying tourists through the West End. Pedicabs, often used by targeted tourists, are increasingly drawing attention from authorities around safety fears and its unregulated fares charged.

Public reaction to the seizure has been largely supportive, with many calling for tougher enforcement against unregulated motorised pedicabs. The presence of these vehicles, particularly in busy areas, has become a divisive issue as concerns grow over their safety, legality, and contribution to congestion.

This action reflects ongoing efforts by City Police to improve safety standards for all who use London’s cycling infrastructure, ensuring that vehicles which pose risks are removed promptly from public spaces.

A City Police Officers spokesperson said on social media: “Cycle team seized this E-bike Pedicab on the Embankment. After it was seen travelling at speed down a cycle lane, endangering others.

“The vehicle had been illegally modified making it a motor-tricycle. The officers were also concerned the modification posed a fire risk.”
