Cambridge ‘Taxicard Scheme’ amended to allow riders to use two vouchers per trip instead of just one
Cambridge City Council’s Taxicard scheme for disabled people on low incomes is being improved to make it easier for its members to use.
The Taxicard scheme helps people pay for taxi journeys by providing them with a book of vouchers. Each voucher entitles the individual to £3.80 (from 1 April) off the cost of a taxi fare. Vouchers can be used on fares of £4.80 or more and the member must pay at least £1 towards the fare.
From 1 April until 30 September 2021, Taxicard scheme members will be able to choose to use up to two vouchers per trip when travelling by taxi. Currently they can only use one.
A review of the overall service is currently underway with proposed changes set to be presented to the council’s Planning and Transport Scrutiny Committee later this year. That review will look at how the vouchers will operate after 30 September.
Cllr Nicky Massey, Executive Councillor Transport and Community Safety, said: “Our Taxicard scheme provides much needed support to people who are disabled and on low incomes and we want to make sure that where we can make improvements we do so.
“We know that many of our scheme members have changed circumstances as a result of the pandemic and some are totally reliant on taxis to get around.
“We want to do all we can to help them so they have one less thing to worry about.
“We are reviewing the service to see what more we can do to support members and while we do that work we want to help by doubling the number of vouchers they can use per taxi fare.”
