British motorists prefer European roads over pothole-plagued UK

New research from RAC Europe reveals a growing discontent among British drivers with the state of UK roads, especially when compared to those across the Channel.

The survey indicates that the majority of motorists who have driven in Europe believe the road conditions there are superior, with significantly fewer potholes and smoother surfaces.

A striking 62% of drivers say local roads in Europe are in better condition than those in the UK. Only 17% believe the opposite. This sentiment extends to motorways as well, where over half (57%) of respondents feel European motorways suffer from fewer and less severe potholes than UK equivalents, which are used by millions daily.

The study also highlighted other areas where UK roads lag behind. A third of drivers find European road signs easier to understand, with only 30% favouring UK signage. Painted road markings, such as those at junctions and give-way lines, are also deemed clearer abroad by 37% of motorists.

Additionally, roadside cleanliness is another area where the UK falls short. A significant 34% of drivers believe European roads are cleaner, with less roadside litter, compared to just 11% who think UK roads are tidier.

The findings reflect a widespread perception that UK road infrastructure is deteriorating, particularly in comparison to that of neighbouring European countries. This could be a call to action for UK authorities to address the state of the nation's roads.

RAC Europe spokesman Rod Dennis said: “There’s much talk about just how dire the state of the UK’s local roads are, but to hear drivers think they are significantly worse than elsewhere in Europe is shocking. This begs the question: if other countries can manage to have decent quality highways to drive on, why can’t we? It’s even more concerning from a safety perspective to learn just how many drivers think the UK’s motorways are plagued with potholes compared to the smooth surfaces of their European counterparts, as it’s these high-speed routes that carry most traffic.

“Aside from having fewer potholes, European roads also come up trumps for their lack of litter and better visibility of road markings. So, it’s not just better weather drivers are benefitting from when they’re abroad – the condition of the roads makes them safer to drive on too.”
