Basingstoke taxi fares to rise in 2025: Second increase in three years to cover rising costs

Taxi fares in Basingstoke and Deane will have increased from 8 January 2025, following approval from the Borough Council’s Cabinet. This adjustment, proposed by the local taxi federation, marks the second fare revision since 2022.

The updated rates include a five per cent rise in the flag fare, now set at £4.20, up from £4. For longer journeys, such as a five-mile trip, fares will increase by 16 per cent, moving from £12.20 to £14.20.

Initially, the trade requested a flat £1 increase to the flag fare, consistent with the previous hike. However, the Council opted for a percentage-based model, which aligns with recommendations to ensure fairness across various trip lengths.

Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services and Housing, Laura James, stated that the rise addresses increasing operational costs, promotes the transition to electric taxis, and encourages new drivers to enter the sector. She noted the industry’s struggles post-pandemic, with the number of licensed taxis in the borough dropping from 391 to 108 Hackney carriages.

The decision follows a 14-day public consultation, during which no objections were raised. The Council anticipates the revised fares will provide much-needed relief for drivers while supporting broader sustainability goals.
