TAXI! Are these the best taxi chase scenes in movie history?

Steve Kenton

There are dozens of chase scenes in the movies involving taxis, some are classics, some are instantly forgettable, but are these the best chase scenes ever?

Here are five classic taxi chase scenes chosen at random from five top movies.

Die Hard With A Vengeance

The 1995 American action thriller is the third instalment of the Die Hard film franchise.

It was co-produced and directed by John McTiernan, who directed the first film, and stars Bruce Willis reprising his role as John McClane and Samuel L Jackson as his reluctant sidekick Zeus Carver.

Together they are pitting their wits against the Jeremy Irons villain Peter Krieg, also known as ‘Simon’.

With Simon terrorising New York City, McClaine and Carver are set riddles to taunt the pair.

In one scene, the pair ‘commandeer’ a New York taxi, and tear through Central Park in a bid to get to their next clue. Mid-way through the scene, a man jumps into the cab and orders Carver to take him to his destination, threatening to report him if he doesn't.

The end of the scene sees Carver exit the vehicle, while the terrified passenger sits in the cab shaking, clutching his brief case.

National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets

National Treasure 2 is another action thriller, directed by Jon Turteltaub and starring Nicholas Cage, Harvey Keitel and Ed Harris. It is the sequel to the 2004 film National Treasure.

During a pursuit by Ed Harris, Nicholas Cage and his colleagues try to make a getaway in a Mercedes. However, Ed Harris and his gang are hot on their heels as they steal a Range Rover and a taxi to pursue them through the streets of London.

There are a myriad of continuity errors within the location settings, including Southwark Bridge having one-way working... See if you can spot them all!

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Kingsman: The Golden Circle, has possibly the best taxi chase and fight sequence of any film involving a London taxi.

The 2017 spy comedy is produced and directed by Matthew Vaughn. It is a sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service and stars Colin Firth, Taron Egerton and Mark Strong.

The scene starts with Eggsy (Taron Egerton) throwing a villain into a taxi which is supplied by the Kingsman organisation.

From that point onwards it's a fast-paced fight-fest, which includes Eggsy "roof-surfing" on top of the taxi, and more bizarrely "door-surfing" as the taxi is chased by a number of other vehicles.

The Bourne Supremacy

The Bourne Supremacy is the second film in the five film franchise and is directed by Paul Greegrass.

The film stars Matt Damon as the titular character, along with Julia Stiles and Karl Urban.

The chase scene, which is set in Moscow, starts when Jason Bourne steals a taxi. From that moment on, there is a relentless chase through the streets of Moscow, with Karl Urban hot on the trail of Bourne.

It is a fast-paced, dizzying and somewhat dark chase sequence with some incredible stunt-driving.

Octopussy

While it may not have been one of the best movies in the James Bond franchise, it was certainly one of the funnier ones.

Starring Roger Moore, Steven Berkhoff and Vijay Amritraj, the chase begins in a ‘supercharged’ tuc-tuc taxi in India.

Bond and his sidekick Vijay (Amritraj) are chased through the streets of an Indian city with hilarious consequences, which includes intervention from sword swallowers, fire-walkers and former professional tennis player Vijay Armritraj taking on a number of bad guys armed with a tennis raquet whilst he is controlling the tuc-tuc.
