Toll proposal for Rothehithe Tunnel
Users of the Rotherhithe Tunnel could be hit by a toll charge following the unveiling of Transport for London's proposal to build Cycle Superhighway 4.
CS4 will run from Tower Bridge to Greenwich via Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. It is believed that bringing in a toll charge for Rotherhithe Tunnel could ease the traffic congestion that may be created by the new Cycle Superhighway. Another option that has been suggested is an extension to the congestion charge zone.
It was reported in Southwark News that Councillor Stephanie Cryan said "It’s a good thing to encourage cycling and to have a safe space for cycling, but the issue I have is looking at the modelling of it. There will be delays to buses which is unacceptable and more traffic will be standing still, which increases air pollution."
Among the plans to redesign the road network along the route are major changes to Rotherhithe Roundabout, including five new signal controlled pedestrian crossings.
The consultation for Cycle Superhighway 4 ends on November 19 and can be found at: www.tfl.gov.uk/cs4
