12 drivers caught in two hours using mobile phone behind the wheel by officers hiding on buses

Updated: Mar 2, 2020

West Yorkshire Police have revealed that they made 12 prosecutions in 120 minutes during an operation targeting drivers illegally using their mobile phone whilst behind the wheel.

The operation, which took place during the evening rush hour of 28 February, on Selby Road between Garforth and Colton, saw officers travel on buses alongside other road users to then catch offenders in the act.

Officers in partnership with Arriva Buses utilised their new 'upgraded far more superior Body Worn Video Devices' to capture offences, before radioing officers waiting ahead.

Drivers caught using their mobile phone whilst behind the wheel of a vehicle will be subject to prosecution, which can come with a hefty fine and points on their driving licence.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We will be repeating this again in the near future."
